Paulo Coehlo’s book, The Supreme Gift stirred a whisper to create a 10 Commandments for the heart.
No other Gods – I will not surrender my heart and mind to others or their truths. There is one Truth-Love.
Do not make graven images or bow down to them – I will not let things, or the media dominate my life. I am not airbrushed. I am not what I possess or don’t possess.
Don’t take God’s name in vain – I will not dishonor myself with words of “stupid,” “inept,” “helpless,” “ugly,” or “unworthy.”
Keep the Sabbath day holy – I will honor time for myself to hear my voice, the voice of nature, and Life.
Honor your father and mother – All beings and all life are my teachers, parents, and family.
Do not murder – I will not kill my dreams, my hopes, my mind, nor my heart.
Do not commit adultery – I will not let others or the media tempt me to believe the beloved within me is unworthy, unexciting, beautiful, and perfect as she is.
Do not steal – I will not take from others that which I will not give myself – joy, love, and strength. Nor will I steal from my own to fit in the world.
Do no lie – I will not tell myself ‘someday I will be or reach for that dream.” I have only today. I will not tell myself it doesn’t matter when it does.
Do no covet – I will not feel insignificant or a failure when I others appear to know more, have more, or are more capable than me. I am perfect and sufficient as I am. I am perfect imperfection. I will not covet what I have when another is in need.
The 11th…..
I will not write the commandments upon stone which can be lost, broken, or disfigured. I will write them upon my heart with the ink of Love.
And the only one I need remember …. Love, love, love…..
