The sign said 65 mph. The sign behind the speed limit flashed “Use Caution.” Can I zip along the winding road at 65 mph if I am careful? Or perhaps 65 mph only between the two signs? Is the speed of caution limited, set, and posted? Are the two signs equivalent to a parent’s “maybe” response to your request? The “maybe” you know really means “no”?
Oddly enough, the picture was taken almost a year ago. I remember the drive. I stopped to take a picture of the road ribbon, mountain valley, and the soft of hanging clouds. The signs were simply in my way. A year later it is the signs that capture my attention and ponder. So interesting what you see when you are in the moment. Amusing to notice how your perception changes.
Not long ago, a young boy told me “words suck.” I laughed then and I laugh again now. He’s right. I remember the 1970’s song “Signs” by the Five Man Electrical Band. “Sign, sign, everywhere a sign/ Blockin’ out the scenery, breakin’ my mind/ Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign?” I fold my hands in my lap, giggle, reach for the mouse and click click. And I wonder as I dance with the soft, fly above the mountain valley…. what’s over the bend?
